Patrick McGilligan “Tender Comrades: The Hollywood 19” Wed, February 23rd

Wednesday, February 23 at 7:30pm in the Gaylord Hall Auditorium, film historian Patrick McGilligan will present his lecture, “Tender Comrades: The Hollywood 19”.  The lecture is the first in a series for the OU Presidential Dream Course, “The Hollywood Blacklist” with the Film and Video Studies program. The presentation is free and open to the public.

FVS Summer 2011

It’s not too early to think about your summer plans.  It seems like only last week that we were buried under two feet of snow but those lazy days of 95° temps, porch sitting and Frisbee tossing are just around the bend.  We are offering a host of courses for your summer learning.  Why not take a course or two and knock out some of those required hours?

The OU summer schedule has been revised and improved.  There are now six different “blocks” of summer semesters. We will be offering courses in four of those blocks — A, B, C and F.

Block A: May 16 – June 10

The University of Oklahoma will host film comedy scholars from around the world at the inaugural Film Comedy Conference, set for 10 am, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11 and 12.  The conference will be held in the Heritage Room of the Oklahoma Memorial Union, 900 Asp Ave., Norman.  Paper presentations are free and open to the public.

The conference will include scholars and topics:

  • Tamar Jeffers McDonald, University of Kent, England: “hommecom,” or male comedy
  • Celestino Deleyto, Universidad de Zaragoza, Spain: romantic comedy from the 1930s to the present
  • Frank Scheide, University of Arkansas: silent film comedy
  • Rob King, University of Toronto: sound and slapstick comedy
  • Lucy Fischer, University of Pittsburgh: the film Flirting With Disaster
  • Victoria Sturtevant, OU: Marjorie Main
  • Kevin Sweeney, University of Tampa: the comedies of Jacques Tati
  • Dan Georgakas, Cineaste: Ethnic Humor: The Greek Americans
  • Catherine John, OU: Black Film Comedy
  • Maria DiBattista: sub-genres and topical comedy
  • Joshua Nelson, OU: Native American comedies

Presenters are part of an anthology being published by Wiley-Blackwell Publishers and edited by Andrew Horton, Jeanne H. Lighting Master Class with Steven Poster, ASC

Please join FVS and the Student Film Production Club this Saturday, February 12th from 1pm to 5pm in Nielson Hall room 170 for a Master Class on lighting with cinematographer Steven Poster.  Mr. Poster is the former President of the American Society of Cinematographers and the current President of the International Cinemagographers Guild.  He was the Director of Photography on OU student favorite, Donnie Darko as well as Rocky V, The Box and Southland Tales.  Mr. Poster will give a hands-on workshop on the techniques of Hollywood lighting and also hold a Q&A session.  For more information on Mr. Poster please visit his website: http://edgeofconsciousness.com/
