OU Film Comedy Conference Feb 11 and 12

The University of Oklahoma will host film comedy scholars from around the world at the inaugural Film Comedy Conference, set for 10 am, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11 and 12.  The conference will be held in the Heritage Room of the Oklahoma Memorial Union, 900 Asp Ave., Norman.  Paper presentations are free and open to the public.

The conference will include scholars and topics:

  • Tamar Jeffers McDonald, University of Kent, England: “hommecom,” or male comedy
  • Celestino Deleyto, Universidad de Zaragoza, Spain: romantic comedy from the 1930s to the present
  • Frank Scheide, University of Arkansas: silent film comedy
  • Rob King, University of Toronto: sound and slapstick comedy
  • Lucy Fischer, University of Pittsburgh: the film Flirting With Disaster
  • Victoria Sturtevant, OU: Marjorie Main
  • Kevin Sweeney, University of Tampa: the comedies of Jacques Tati
  • Dan Georgakas, Cineaste: Ethnic Humor: The Greek Americans
  • Catherine John, OU: Black Film Comedy
  • Maria DiBattista: sub-genres and topical comedy
  • Joshua Nelson, OU: Native American comedies
  • Claire Mortimer, Colchester Sixth Form College, England: Alexander Mackendrick’s Ealing Comedies
  • David Shumway, Carnegie Mellon University: Woody Allen, the Chaplin of the New Hollywood

Presenters are part of an anthology being published by Wiley-Blackwell Publishers and edited by Andrew Horton, Jeanne H.
